As UN Member States prepare for UNCTAD XIII, Dr. Nabarro hopes to offer the comprehensive approach for food and nutrition security developed by the UN High Level Task Force on Global Food Security (HLTF) to help contribute to the discussions in Doha. Dr. Nabarro is also the coordinator of this Task Force.
The comprehensive approach is enshrined in the HLTF’s Updated Comprehensive Framework for Action for Food and Nutrition Security (UCFA) - finalized in 2011 - and in a recently prepared HLTF note on Food and Nutrition Security for All through Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. These documents reflect the conviction that ending hunger and malnutrition is achievable and is an essential element of sustainable development.
The UN System High Level Task Force on Global Food Security was established in 2008 and is chaired by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. UNCTAD plays an active role and contributes its valuable trade policy expertise and analysis of macro-economic issues, says Dr. Nabarro in his message to UNCTAD XIII.
Policymakers tackling food insecurity face complex choices regarding water, energy, land and other natural resources; environmental services; financial and human resources; population pressures and climate change.
The UN High Level Task Force advocates a coordinated multi-sectoral action, with all concerned stakeholders participating in decisions that affect their lives, for policy choices that will help people to achieve food and nutrition security in a sustainable way, for enabling smallholders to increase prosperity through being better able to anticipate and manage risks, and for a consistent focus on measurement, analysis and people-centred innovation.
Good nutritional status of women and young children is the cornerstone of equitable development. There is abundant evidence that better nourished children become healthier, better educated and higher-earning adults, and that this impacts positively on both human capital and economic growth.
More and more governments are scaling up their actions for better nutritional outcomes, joining the Scale Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement. Key partners in the Movement continue to build support to national plans and actions, helping in-country stakeholders to demonstrate their impact.
